Abstract:This paper reviews the development stages of Japanese human geography, summarizes the characteristics and trends. The status of human geography is declining in Japan. The scale of the memberships and its impact are going down. The number of students is also decreasing. However, the study of human geography has been in the period of maturity in Japan. Based on the grafted academic system of the West, the Japanese human geography gradually got their self characteristics and styles. For instance, the importance of fieldworks in the research process is highlighted, the division of labor in the research structure is carefully designed, and research quality is taken as more important than quantity in the evaluation of outcomes. In this sense, the reduction in society scale of Japanese human geography is a reference to the Chinese human geography; its research standard and research system also are helpful to the reformation and development of our filed. In this way, the authors hope to push forward the healthy development of Chinese human geography.
